by posted 11/03/2017

Academica Futebol Club president Tony Horta has been named as an inductee to the Connecticut Soccer Hall of Fame's Class of 2018.

Horta's career in Connecticut soccer spans over 30 years. He was the boys soccer head coach at the now closed Saint Thomas Aquinas High School in New Britain.

From there Horta was the assistant coach of women's soccer for national powers the University of Connecticut and the University of Hartford.

In 1991, Horta was tabbed to guide the Quinnipiac College women's soccer team. During his nine year stay at Quinnipiac, Horta directed the team to three conference championships, national rankings and was selected as the Northeast 10 Coach of the Year in 1994. Horta was the head coach of Quinnpiac when they made the transition to Division I athletics.

In 1993, Horta founded the Collegiate Soccer System, LLC which at the time was a company devoted to summer soccer camps and clinics. The Collegiate Soccer System, LLC evolved into a year-round soccer orginization and is the parent company of the Academica Futebol Club.

Following Quinnipiac, Horta became the coaching director for the Cheshire Soccer Club and Cheshire Premier Program.

In 2003, Horta laid the foundation for what would become the Academica Futebol Club. AFC originally had two branches out of Cheshire and in Northwest Connecticut as well as managing an indoor facility in Winsted where he was the Head Coach of the Academica Men's Indoor Team which went to American Indoor Soccer League final in 2003. In the 15 years since, AFC has established itself as one of the top soccer clubs in Connecticut. AFC under Horta's guidance has seen growth at all levels and is proud of the footprint it has had in Connecticut soccer and in the development of Connecticut soccer players of all ages.

Horta was named the Head Coach of the nationally regarded New England Mutiny of the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL). Over the next three season Horta managed the team to a National Final and a National Final Four while being named the WPSL Coach of the Year in 2007.

Tony has been involved in with the Connecticut Olympic Development Program, has sat on the Board of Governors for the Connecticut Junior Soccer Association (CJSA) and has been the Director of the CJSA Elite League.

The Connecticut Soccer Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at 5:30 pm at the Radisson in Cromwell. Ticket information will be forthcoming.

CONGRATULATIONS TONY!!!!
